I hid behind my mother and asked myself, “Should I dare look again?” In all of my six years, I had never seen such an unusual looking person-A lady begging with grossly deformed hands. While I obviously was not cognizant of it at the time, I believe this unique exposure to skin disease laid the foundation for my interest in dermatology.
However, ambition alone does not equate with meaningful action. Accordingly I have sought the training and luckily acquired the credentials to substantiate it from the best the country and perhaps the world has to offer! After graduation & postgraduation from the stellar Kasturba Medical College,Manipal with distinctions & honours (to motivate me at every step) I furthered my career with some international exposure at the world famous University College Hospital,London.Doubling my postgraduation degree at the Army Hospital refined my commitment ,discipline and work ethics. Detail-orientation and thoroughness are my strengths that mesh well with the field. These skills helped me as a researcher & maybe in winning the coveted “National Award for the best paper”on Leprosy in 2012 as well!
Drawn to the emotional rewards of removing not only a nasty skin lesion but also treating a depressed teenager with acne led me to acquire additional skills in asthetic dermatology, cosmetology, dermatosurgery & Lasers.
As a dermatologist,I find it quite satisfying to not only hear a patient say he or she feels better, but also seeing the disappearance or improvement immediately in front of me(and them!) rather than something that’s hidden in a lab value.
Finally,to be able to treat and heal skin lesions with their accompanying medical and social prejudices drives me spiritually, emotionally & intellectuallyto become a successful dermatologist. After all,its often said –“Someone who does nothing for his fellow man leads only a half life”.
