So what were the actual claim amounts against dermatologists in malpractice lawsuits?
According to the Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA), the payouts against dermatologists have dropped in recent years after rising between 1986 and 2005. The average indemnity payment was approximately $240,000 between 2006 and 2010 but previously was approximately $290,000 between 2001 and 2005.
