Claire’s, the preteen fashion accessory and jewelry store, is under fire for selling make up with possible asbestos. The shopping mall staple is pulling makeup kits off the shelves after a Rhode Island six-year old girl purchased a lip gloss and eyeshadow kit that contained Termolite Asbestos, a mineral that can cause mesothelioma and other kinds of cancer.
According to Claire’s, initial and subsequent tests showed that make up kits contain no cancer-causing asbestos. However, the young girl’s mother, Kristi Warner, who works at an asbestos litigation law firm, told NBC 10 that she purchased and tested 17 other makeup products from Claire’s in nine different states and found that Tremolite asbestos was found in nearly every product.
"I physically sank," Warner. "I ended up sitting on the ground, just trying to wrap my head around how something like that could end up in our home."
According to TheStreet, the retailer, which boasts more than 2,500 stores in both North America and Europe, has halted makeup kit sales and are offering refunds to inquiring customers.
