Learn New Ways to Protect Your Skin from the Sun
Dermatologist & Author Dr. Doris J. Day
According to The Skin Cancer Foundation, one in 5 Americans and one in 3 Caucasians will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with more than 1 million skin cancers diagnosed annually. Approximately 59,940 melanomas will be diagnosed this year, with nearly 8,110 resulting in death. More than 20 people die each day from skin cancer.
Sun exposure is the main cause of irreversible skin damage including sunburn, premature skin aging and skin cancer. While we all know that protecting ourselves from the sun is essential -- we understand the dangers of the sun's powerful UVA and UVB rays -- many of us still do not take all the precautions we need to ensure we are out of harm's way. It could be, in part, due to some confusion about the best ways to protect our skin. We report confusion when it comes to SPF (no, you cannot put on two coats of SPF 8 and expect SPF 16 protection) and as new sun protection technologies come on the market, we need someone to tell us what's what.
Dr. Doris J. Day, an educational spokesperson from The Skin Cancer Foundation in New York City is available for interviews to help dispel myths and misconceptions about sun protection. From sunscreen to sun-protective clothing she will talk about everything we need to know to truly and effectively guard our skin against sun damage.
From creams to clothing, Dr. Day will provide the definitive word in safeguarding against excess exposure to sunlight.
