So what were the actual claim amounts against dermatologists in malpractice lawsuits?

According to the Physician Insurers Association of America (PIAA), the payouts against dermatologists have dropped in recent years after rising between 1986 and 2005.  The average indemnity payment was approximately $240,000 between 2006 and 2010 but previously was approximately $290,000 between 2001 and 2005.  

According to Dermatology World's Richard Nelson, the top 10 conditions that lead to lawsuits against dermatologists include:

1.  Malignant neoplasms of the skin

2.  Acne

3.  Dyschromia

4.  Psoriasis

5.  Melanoma

6.  Benign neoplasms of skin

7.  Contact dermatitis or other eczema

8.  Viral warts

9.  Disorders of skin and subcutaneous tissue - NOS

10.  Plastic surgery, desire for
