AAD 2011: American Academy of Dermatology Recognizes Honorary Members

NEW ORLEANS (Feb 4, 2011) — The American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) has awarded honorary memberships to Martin M. Black, MD, Paul R. Gross, MD, FAAD, Robert Jackson, MD, FAAD, Stephen I. Katz, MD, PhD, FAAD, Elizabeth I. McBurney, MD, FAAD, Charles J. McDonald, MD, FAAD, and Vera H. Price, MD, FAAD. Acknowledged today at the Academy's 69th Annual Meeting, the honorees received this award for their lifetime dedication and distinguished service to the Academy and its mission.

Martin M. Black, MD, is a professor of dermatological immunopathology at the St. John's Institute of Dermatology at St. Thomas Hospital in London. He was the Academy’s first International Board Observer and provided significant contributions to the Academy during his tenure. He is well respected for his clinical expertise, organizational service and research in dermatology.

Paul R. Gross, MD, FAAD, is a Philadelphia-based dermatologist in private practice, and an emeritus head of the dermatology section at Pennsylvania Hospital. He has volunteered as faculty of a major teaching program for his entire career and has been influential in the careers of many dermatologists. Dr. Gross’s support of the specialty of dermatology has helped advance clinical care, teaching and research.

Robert Jackson, MD, FAAD, is a professor emeritus of medicine in the division of dermatology at the University of Ottawa, and a former president and secretary-treasurer of the Canadian Dermatology Association. He has dedicated his career to the service of his patients, his students and the care of the underserved native Inuit of Baffin Island, Nova Scotia.

Stephen I. Katz, MD, PhD, FAAD, is director of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, and a senior investigator in the dermatology branch of the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Katz’s leadership at the National Institutes of Health has raised the reputation of the dermatology branch and the institutes in all circles of medicine. He has served as a mentor to many leaders in dermatology and has been instrumental in the development of their careers.

Elizabeth I. McBurney, MD, FAAD, is a clinical professor of dermatology at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and the Tulane University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. She is a past member of the Academy’s Board of Directors. She also has served as president of the American Dermatological Association, the Women’s Dermatologic Society, and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. She has published many articles on dermatologic subjects and has won many awards for her contributions to dermatology.

Charles J. McDonald, MD, FAAD, is a professor of medical science and chair of the department of dermatology at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, R.I. Dr. McDonald has dedicated his career to the service of the Academy, Brown University and its trainees, and cancer patients. While president of the American Cancer Society, he greatly elevated the profile of the specialty of dermatology among the public and all of medicine. He is also a past member of the Academy’s Board of Directors.

Vera H. Price, MD, FAAD, is a professor of dermatology at the University of California at San Francisco. Dr. Price is a world-renowned expert in hair disease and is a founder and active supporter of many patient advocacy and research groups. Dr. Price also is a past member of the Academy’s Board of Directors. She has published many articles on hair loss and has shared her vast expertise in this area through mentoring.
