American Academy of Dermatology Announces Awards and Lectureships for 69th Annual Meeting

• Awarded to: W. Marston Linehan, MD, chief of urologic surgery and the urologic oncology branch, Center for Cancer Research, at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland.
• Presentation: Familial Kidney Cancer Syndromes with Cutaneous Manifestations. Dr. Linehan will speak about how his findings on the genetic basis and clinical manifestations of familial human kidney cancer syndromes are leading to improved management and targeted therapeutic approaches for these disorders.
• Award Specifics: The award is presented annually to a “scientist whose contribution in the field of cancer research has been outstanding in practice and distinction.” Established in 1972 by Murray Gruber in memory of his wife, the award recognizes and supports cancer research and provides a forum for the enrichment of knowledge of dermatologists in this important scientific endeavor.

CLARENCE S. LIVINGOOD, MD, AWARD AND LECTURESHIP

• Awarded to: Neil S. Prose, MD, FAAD, professor of dermatology and pediatrics and director of pediatric dermatology at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina.
• Presentation: Cultivating Curiosity. Dr. Prose will explain why approaching patients with curiosity can help dermatologists learn more about their patients and, as a result, provide more empathic and effective care.
• Award Specifics: The lectureship was established in 1993 by Settlor and Doris Giddey who were both patients and friends of Dr. Clarence S. Livingood. The lectureship highlights dermatology issues, including organizational aspects, socioeconomic issues, ethics, professionalism and the “art” of dermatology.

MARION B. SULZBERGER, MD, MEMORIAL AWARD AND LECTURESHIP

• Awarded to: Thomas S. Kupper, MD, FAAD, Thomas B. Fitzpatrick professor of dermatology at Harvard Medical School, and the chair of the department of dermatology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, all in Boston. 
• Presentation: Skin in the Game: New Perspectives on T-Cells, Immunity, and Cancer. Dr. Kupper will discuss how advances in the understanding of how T-cells protect skin is changing the way physicians think about protective immunity, vaccination, cancer and inflammatory skin diseases. These insights are being translated into new approaches for patient care.
• Award Specifics: The award, (part of the Lila Gruber Fund Award of the Academy), was established in December 1983 by Murray Gruber as a living memorial in honor of Dr. Marion B. Sulzberger. Chosen by a committee of the Academy, recipients are recognized for their significant contributions to the understanding of clinical medicine through basic research.
